OSHA Recordkeeping Advisor

You indicated that the event or exposure that caused the injury or illness occurred while the affected employee was on travel for work.

Did the event or exposure occur while the affected employee was taking a detour for personal reasons?

NOTE: The employer is not required to consider an injury or illness work-related if it occurs while the employee is on a personal detour from the route of business travel. This exception allows employers to exclude injuries and illnesses that occur when the worker has taken a side trip for personal reasons while on a business trip, such as a vacation or sight-seeing excursion, to visit relatives, or for some other personal purpose. See, the preamble to the 2001 final rule revising OSHA’s recordkeeping regulation at 66 Federal Register 5960.
