USERRA Advisor

Main Menu

The USERRA Advisor is designed to help you learn more about the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA). A series of questions has been developed for employees and employers. To determine your rights and responsibilities, select from the list of questions below. To ensure an accurate understanding of USERRA, we encourage you to go through all of the sections in the Advisor that are applicable to you.

After you review the USERRA Advisor, we would greatly appreciate any comments, ideas or suggestions. If you experience any technical problems with the Advisor, or have any suggestions for improving it, please let us know by sending an e-mail to William Coughlin at Coughlin.William.E@dol.gov. If you have specific questions regarding the law, please contact your local VETS office. If you have general questions about veterans' employment, please visit Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS).

In general, Federal employees have substantially the same rights under USERRA as non-Federal employees. Veterans who are Federal employees or who are applying for Federal employment may have additional rights under the Veterans’ Preference statute. If you have a 5 or 10 point veterans’ preference rating, or are unsure if you have veterans’ preference points, please visit the Veterans’ Preference Advisor. If you are a veteran employed by a Federal agency that is undergoing a reduction-in-force (RIF), or about to undergo a RIF that might affect you, the Veterans’ Preference Advisor can provide you with information about your rights and responsibilities in this area.
