FLSA - Child Labor Rules

Because the youth is 12 or 13 years of age, he or she may only work in agriculture on a farm if a parent has given written permission, or one of the youth's parents is working on the same farm. The youth may only work during hours when school is not in session. The rules are the same for all youth, migrant children as well as local resident children.

Please note that there are some dangerous jobs that the young worker may not do. The Secretary of Labor has found that these jobs are too hazardous for anyone under 16 years of age. These dangerous jobs are listed on the next page.
